News Alert

June 2006
The year 2006 marks the 90 th anniversary of Russia ’s zapovednik system. Reserve staffers get their own day – November 12.

Minister of Natural Resources Yuri Trutnev signed a decree in April 2006 declaring that November 12 will be hereafter “Protected Area Staff Day.” Traditionally in Russia each branch of industry or culture has its own holiday to commend workers in that area – Railroad Workers’ Day, Teachers’ Day, Librarians’ Day, etc. Now, zapovednik and national park staff and supporters will have their own annual holiday to celebrate.

November 12 (or October 30 by the old Russian calendar) was chosen as it marks the date in 1916 when the first ever Russian law on protected areas was passed – the “Law on establishing rules in hunting protected areas” Two months later, the first federal strictly protected area – Barguzinsky Zapovednik – was created on Lake Baikal.

This year on November 12 an all-Russian conference on the 90 th anniversary of the zapovednik system will be held inviting staff from protected areas, zapovednik activists, and NGOs. The non-profit foundation “Protected Country” (Strana zapovednaya) will sponsor a contest to determine the most professional and dedicated staff members in the zapovednik system. Several other conferences on biosphere reserves, Lake Baikal , and other topics will also be held around the celebratory date.
